Cigarettes, coffee cups, and exotic birds (Back-In-The-Day-Series)

Sampson and Allison
(This is my new "Back in the Day" series from the original TAMPA TAXI SHOTS. This was from January 14, 2006!)
When cab drivers are in between fares they go to what are called stands. The entire county is divided into stands for almost each neighborhood. This morning I was at the Hyde Park stand. This is located across from the Kash and Karry on Swann. Look to the east where the basketball courts are and you will probably see cabs there.
If you see United #497 that is me. Come over and say hi. I have never meet anyone who has read my blog. It would be beyond cool to do so!
The two drivers in the photo are from our international division. Allyson, one of our female drivers, is from England. Sampson, is from Ethiopia. These two are very good friends and drinking buddies.
Note the cigarettes and coffee cups. That is almost a staple among drivers. I personally do not smoke. I do, however, consume massive amounts of coffee. That comes with the job.
I did take advantage of a Grey and misty morn to walk over to a retention pond that is next to the stand and found some cool birds. They have yet to figure out there are no fish in the pond.Egretmist  I think one of them is a baby Rosette Spoonbill. They are seen more in south Florida. I did see one later at the cruise ship terminal where the Royal Caribbean liner was parked. Again in a retention pond  Like I always said; you don't need airline tickets to exotic places to find interesting subjects. Damn! I stepped on a twig and they took off!

Violetta Storms bikini shoot

Here is the beautiful Michelle. There is a possibility she may be at the spring shootout. Lets hope so. She is a pro in every way and represents Dave Hall and what he is doing well.

Angel The Rescued Kitten

I have a new and wonderful friend. Her name is Angel. George found her on his way home at 3 in the morning running around on the elevated span of highway 19 in Clearwater. He pulled over and pulled out of a storm drain. He took her home and knocked on my door. He has two cats and wanted me to keep her overnight until he could find a neighbor to take her. I fell in love with her. She is now my best friend and keeps me company for I live alone. It's not fair that so much cuteness can be crammed into such a little thing.

RETIRED..what did you expect?

I have retired from taxi driving for good. I turned the keys in and walked away from 24 years on the streets. In a way, like Ronald Reagan said, the taxi business walked away from me. Anyway, I am home and doing nothing but getting caught up on a bunch of personal stuff. I am loving it. Check out this video about how I spend most mornings now. I have applied to work for Lyft and was approved, of course. I should be getting a new car next week and will be driving for them. Ride share has become the new taxi companies and they deliver what I am looking for. I have two monthly checks coming in which are enough to live off of. So don't worry about me. Its just that I was not exactly ready to retire but the circumstances gave me no choice. It does feel good, by the way.

What happened to Tommy Duncan and Sticks of Fire blog?

The image below is a 2005 TBT article I still have about the Tampa blogger scene. The big boy was Tommy Duncan. He stopped blogging around 2008, and was never seen again. Here is what Creative Loafing said about that era: "The 40-something blogger founded the most-often-cited independent Tampa Bay news blog, Sticks of Fire, in Feb. 2004, and the site, without much financial assistance from advertising, is still going strong today with a stable of more than a dozen regular contributors. In 2005, Duncan was featured in a tbt* story about the young lions of the local Internet. Today, about half of them have fallen by the wayside or (in the case of famous sexy blogger Rachel Moran) moved to New Jersey. Duncan keeps on posting. The local digital scene has grown, but he's not sure it has improved in quality."

Where's Tim?

I have been in the woods camping with friends. We had no idea last weekend would be the hottest Halloween on record in Florida. This fire is beautiful but it only made things hotter. I have also been swimming. Now, the pool is extending its hours and I will be able to work out six days a week. My training program is coming along and its now the most enjoyable aspect of my day. posted from Bloggeroid

Images from the streets

These images from downtown Tampa were taken on the day I ran out of gas. They tell a story about prosperity in this econ omy. This is Joe who helped me when I ran out of gas. He is a mechanic at the United Cab of Tampa shop.

Riley Bullough - the new Buc standout

Riley Bullough the new Buc standout When Riley Bullough came into Tampa Bay Buccaneer training camp, he was a long shot to make the team. However, something happened along the way for this camp body - that would be "Hard Knocks" of HBO. The Michigan State linebacker was immediately recognized as a personable good looking guy with hustle and heart. We also found out he is a singer songwriter with talent. In the first episode of Hard Knocks he stole the show. That was not supposed to happen for someone nobody had heard of. He latter went on to make some monster tackles in the expedition game against Cincinnati. I can't imagine this guy being cut. He has been branded "Joe Dirt" and the potential for merchandise sales and publicity is high. I can imagine Bullough making a tackle on a national FOX game and hearing Joe Buck saying "Joe Dirt with an impressive tackle." Riley Bullough has added some real excitement to a team that historically has lac...
