What Lyft and Uber will take from the Tampa taxi business

A lyft car at the Iconic sign on Florida ave downtown Tampa
I have been a hack in Tampa Florida since 1995. Unlike the estimated 50% of Americans that hate their jobs, I have never had a day when I did not feel like going to work. Certainly, the last few years  have not been fun because the economy fell apart like a three dollar watch. However, economies are like tides and this one is on the rebound, at a snail's pace. I would like to thank Mr. Obama for that but that would not be fair. The economy is recovering despite any fiscal policy of his. That being said - there are challenges.

My job is inherently difficult. We face strange and deranged people street level on a daily basis. Taxi companies in Tampa (which are regulated) must serve the general population. We have no choice. Short fares, drunk fares, people going to buy drugs (they don't tell you that) we must pick up. Don't get me wrong, there are business people, beautiful women, great trippers, and long hauls. The difficulty comes in not really knowing if you will make any money. For someone with a gamblers personality, this job is fine. I am getting older and risk is not my favorite hobby anymore.

I am a people person. I have met some of the most outstanding people in the world doing this. People I would  have never met, I met through the cab. When my girlfriend died a few years ago, it was my passengers that gave me solace and comfort. I have met general officers from Central Command and asked them if UFO's were real or if we went to the moon in 1969. In sort, I have enjoyed my life and time as a taxi driver.

UBER and LYFT now threaten all of this

Lyft adds nothing to any community they go into. They only cannibalize on the business that is already there. In fact, their drivers only "cherry Pick" the cream. It is a hipster service being run by hipsters. Unlike cities that are regulated, these drivers will not have to work in the poor and BLACK areas of town. They can sit in their little green cars, pick up their green passengers, and feel they are saving the whales or something. All they are doing is taking the best fares away from people who have paid their dues and now, will not be able to survive.

We won't make it because the daytime business of little old ladies and poor people at grocery stores and bars will not pay the lease. Five dollar fares with no tip will not work.

UBER and LYFT are Illegal in most cities

Is that who you want to ride with? People who are breaking the law? I bet most people who drive for them are Democrats. These are the very people who criticize the Republicans for their law and order stance. I guess this proves my point. Nobody should frequent a business that is a speak easy by nature.
Drivers have been on the ropes for the last few years. There is not enough slices of the pie to go around. Men have been doing this for years and raised families doing it. Are you wanting to make beggars out of us?

If Lyft has something to contribute to the local community, then they should be giving a shot. They are not and that is why Hillsborough County has shut them out. I really believe the HCPTC should start giving out those $800 fines and impounding their cars. Maybe that would knock the smug look off their faces.
Hard Times For Tampa

Tampa Bay area has had hard times since 2007 on all fronts. We are now walking on wobbly knees. Please allow us to recover from this Tommy John. Good jobs  have left. The world has changed and I know that is the argument for the app service. This is just what the hipsters want. No, let me tell you what people should want and what they should expect.

Tampa Taxi Companies and Drivers meet regulated standards

All Hillsborough County taxi drivers have been screened by the HCPTC for criminal background. If a driver has a warrant or drug offense, he will not be allowed to drive. All drivers  have been screened by a tough as nails insurance company who will not insure drivers who get tickets. Forget about the ticket clinic helping you. If there is smoke, there's fire, and you will not be allowed to driver, until you learn to drive.

The taxi companies must carry a very high limit of liability insurance or they will be considered a threat to the community and the companies will not be allowed to operate. I am talking in the millions of dollars. The Tampa community knows when they call a cab, the driver is not a dangerous fugitive and the company has very deep pockets and is committed to providing the best service anyone can possible ask for.

Lyft is operating against a "cease and desist" order. Why does that make you so sure they have run background investigations on their drivers? What makes you think they have purchased the required liability for when one of their drunk drivers kills you or someone in your family? There is, in fact, every reason that outlaws from the start are not going to comply with any of this.

The end result of Lyft's impact

They will only serve hipsters and college kids with smart phones. Period. They poor suffer as the number of taxi drivers drop off because of the paltry wages. The Tampa Bay area suffers because of these predators. Why would Lyft care? They are based out of Seattle and Uber out of San Francisco. They have no vested interest in the Tampa area. United and  Yellow were founded by local Tampons.

That's what gets me about Bob Buckhorn - the mayor of Tampa. This cat is the one that allowed the food trucks into downtown Tampa, completely ignoring the restaurants that pay taxes and are located downtown. He justified it, in the same way he is Lyft, that in this economy we need jobs. True, what we need are jobs that people can live off of. You are making beggars out of people Buckhorn. I guess  its good your wife had a good job before you got elected because you would have been flying a sign like the rest of the bums on the streets. No offense to bums. At least they work and struggle every day. The hardest thing you ever did was take your mutt to the dog park.

There was a lady who because I was ON TIME for her airport ride, said she could not wait for Uber to come into the area. She used to be the press secretary of Jeb Bush. If she reads this, she will know who I am talking about. She offended me deeply. The worst part was, she had no idea what she was talking about. I do. I  have lived the life for 19 years and I will fight for my livelihood.

This war has just begun.

  1. Amen Tim!!! these Uber and Lyft drivers should be pulled over, arrested, and their cars impounded for operating a vehicle for hire without permits. Let me catch one over here in Pinellas county stealing one of my fares and watch what happens...But I'm a crazy Florida Cracker who believes in street justice when all else fails...CRACKER

  2. To put this in perspective,

The HCPTC does not really enforce their own laws set forth by their commission,

Example: Why are the Supershuttle vans allowed to pick up in Hillsborough county, airport and residential, but yet some maybe most have no permits on their vehicles and why does the HCPTC keep issuing permits for cabs and towncars when there are already too many vehicles in ground transportation as is? (over 800 cabs and 1200 town cars) and growing!

The HCPTC has been corrupt from day one, every president they have had has been busted for illegal activites and to charge $100 for a hack license every year when a driver license is only $48 every 10 years!

    Simply put: GREED!

Secondly customers/passengers are tired of and do not feel comfortable getting into a vehicle with drivers from third world countries that speed, rip them off on the meter and a cab that smells.

And customers/passengers are tired of calling the cab companies and dealing with reservations/operators that are not properly trained, impolite and rude, These fares stopped calling for a cab because of poor customer service skills. The call volume for taxi's is way down for said reasons.

I DO NOT condone nor would I use Uber or Lyft drivers. Seems the HCPTC won't give a dam either.

  6. "United and Yellow were founded by local Tampons." I think you meant to write Tampanians, not Tampons. Lyft and Uber are here to stay. Maybe you should clear up your act and treat people better by not overcharging, smoking, taking longer routes, and claiming you credit card machine is "broken" but ill take you to an ATM while the meter is running. You did this to yourself. A little competition never hurt anyone.

  7. Technology once again has changed an industry. There is room for the "ride share" industry in any city, but they need to be recognized as such and be regulated just like cab and limo drivers. Speaking of regulations Hillsborough is way over regulated with their 5 year old car rule and outrageous fees which are about 4 times more than any other county. The HCPTC is corrupt and have been paid off long ago to make tougher regulations to illuminate new competition and forcing the public to pay outrageous per mile fees, its criminal. If you think I'm crazy think again, their former commissioner is rotting in jail right now for that very thing, cabs can also be 5 years older than "luxury sedans" gee how did that rule get bought, I mean implemented into the regulations, The permits do not have to cost that much, all a car should need is a safety inspection(no matter what year) and have a flawless interior & exterior, not some converted out cop car. Trust me the people calling Uber would never call a cab, they are a better class of people, they are not telling Uber drivers to drive to every shady hotel until they score drugs. So to my point there is room for the "ride share" industry and hopefully they will force the County Commission just like they have in every other city to change the regulations, not just for them but for everyone, so more competition can come in and god forbid save the public some money....

What happened to Tommy Duncan and Sticks of Fire blog?

The image below is a 2005 TBT article I still have about the Tampa blogger scene. The big boy was Tommy Duncan. He stopped blogging around 2008, and was never seen again. Here is what Creative Loafing said about that era: "The 40-something blogger founded the most-often-cited independent Tampa Bay news blog, Sticks of Fire, in Feb. 2004, and the site, without much financial assistance from advertising, is still going strong today with a stable of more than a dozen regular contributors. In 2005, Duncan was featured in a tbt* story about the young lions of the local Internet. Today, about half of them have fallen by the wayside or (in the case of famous sexy blogger Rachel Moran) moved to New Jersey. Duncan keeps on posting. The local digital scene has grown, but he's not sure it has improved in quality."

Hillsborough County bans Uber today as taxi company

The HCPT and Hillsborough County public commission today affirmed Uber is an illegal taxi company and bared them from operating in the Tampa area. This is wonderful news to longtime drivers like me. An Uber attorney asked Hillsborough County to make new rules to fit the trendy ridesharing movement pioneered by his company and Lyft, but was told flatly on Wednesday that Uber is an illegal taxi service. The county's Public Transportation Commission unanimously affirmed that an appointed officer had enough evidence to fine Uber, based in San Francisco, for providing hiring and public taxi services without proper licensing. Uber attorney Drew Sorrell held to the company's argument that it isn't in transportation. As a technology company, it doesn't need to follow transportation regulations as they are written. "There's a perfectly good way to do this, and that is to write the rules so that they fit," said Sorrell, of the Lowndes Drosdick Doster Kantor

The Price of gas is now lower then when Obama took office

The day Obama became President (notice the price of gas) It's about time! The photo above was taken at the Racetrack gas station the day Obama took office in 2009. The photo below that is at the same station today and its back to the same level. Gas is a major expense for taxi drivers. Nothing could be better news than to see gas continue to fall. Gas is lower today then six years ago Are you going to give the credit to Obama? Is it his economic and energy policies that have led to this fall? I would like to believe that but I can't. If it were not for Obama's green energy policies, gas may even be lower then it is today. He has tried to kill the coal industry. He won't allow off shore drilling. He has stopped the pipeline from being built. Thank God, the fracking guys have been able to create a new source of oil and lower the demand for middle east crude. This president (and his fans) for years wanted investigations into the oil companies because they t

The political decision process on Uber

Today at the hockey arena in downtown Tampa, all of the local Tampa Bay state representatives and senators gathered  for the transportation hearing. What was first and foremost on the agenda was the subject of uber and its relationship to the Tampa Bay community. Both sides offered their reasons many of them anecdotal in nature. (Senator Jeff Brandes from St Petersburg, the one Center in the picture, came across as an arrogant asshole. He was rude and belligerent and combative with all speakers. This is an example of someone who bullied his way into a political position, no doubt. Sorry for the sidebar). State senator Arthenia Joyner was the best of the lot. She asked the most pointed questions and dug deep into the real issues. She pointed out to the room that seemed surprised to find out that all of the fees that apply to the cab companies by regulation uber has none of that. There are insurance requirements, licenses and fees, and fees associated with the airport authority, m

Uber hits roadblock in Florida

Ubers exponential growth has not been without problems. After amazing advances throughout the United States and Europe, they have hit a roadblock in Florida. Uber is now fighting it out with Miami and Tampa, where they are currently illegal. Understand it is against the law to ride in an uber car in Tampa. It's currently against the law for an uber car to be dispatched in under an hour. Tampa and Miami classify ride-share as a limousine company. The rules are a $50 minimum, and 1 hour advance notification. Why? This rule is to protect taxi ccompanies and drivers, who've invested in medallions. Travis Kalanick says these rules are crazy. he says he is spending too much time fighting the officials in Florida. he says he would rather be at the Miami Shore Club. that is a swanky boutique hotel in South Beach. google it and see if you have the money to stay there. As much as people say they like uber, they are contributing to the demise of a regulated industry that serves the

St. Petersburg Taxi tells the truth about Uber and ride share

Albert is a cab driver that follows the rules and pays his insurance, license, and operation fees Guest post by Albert Zee: Uber problem in Tampa Bay.....Taxi industry has been under siege since 2007-2008 due to economical collapse of 2008, then surge in new taxi cab start ups between 2010-204 which were still mostly operating according to all the rules and regulations prolonged recovery. Then uber came around with "great solution" to our transportation problems and said, what regulations, what commercial insurance, what background checks and what cars (we don't need to own any and our drivers don't need to be regulated because we are "rideshare" company), we will invade and steal the market by offering rides at half a price, we will put all those law obeying "taxi cartels" out of business by creating bogus press releases about advantages of uber, by lying to public, drivers and politicians, they don't know any better any ways. I was sick in the ER

I was sick in the ER today. My head was swimming; I was off balance; I have high blood pressure; I was in trouble. An Iranian driver gave me a ride to the ER. The good news was they could find nothing wrong. My meds have my bp under control and my motor skills were good. Their best guess was its an inner ear issue, and told me to see an ENT specialist.

PTC ticketing Uber and Lyft drivers

The HCPTC got tired of waiting for the Florida Legislature to do something about the rules of ride share. Now, they are taking matters into their own hands. They are detaining and writing tickets of $700 to the illegal drivers. Next, they will begin impounding vehicles. This should be expected. When you have no charters, licenses, insurance, you are as bogus as the day is long. Could you open a bar without a liquor license? Could you open a radio station without an FCC license? Could you open a barber shop without the proper permits? No to all the above. So why does Uber think they can get around the law by just existing and ignoring all the rules and regulations that everyone else has to play by?

A homeless story

It was hard to get to mad at this guy today. He was just trying to survive like I am. I have been driving for 14 years and I have regularly picked "Dave" up over the years. He used to live on Wisconsin ave until he was evicted. I picked him up today at the Crosstown Inn, a sort of rundown motel at Dale Mabry and Gandy. He needed to go to Metropolitan Ministries because that is where his mail is now being delivered. I agreed to take him and pick up his Social Security check and then, take him to Amscot. Sounded simple. It got a little complicated. He went inside the Mission, which was crowded with people picking up boxes of food and waiting in line inside for what the sign on the door said "food, money, living expenses" and other things like that. I could not help but notice that the parking lot was full of new and late model cars. Go see for yourself. Just go by. That really pissed me off. Many time in my life, I have had to sell a car or other

Uber was warned about rapist driver

These women are members of congress and are protesting Uber (I tried to warn you about Uber) Nidhi Shah said she complained to the web-based taxi service after the driver stared at her and smiled "creepily" during a November 26 journey in the Indian capital. "I took a cab with Shiv Kumar Yadav in Delhi on Nov 26th. Scares me beyond belief," Shah tweeted late Tuesday. "He was staring at me and smiling -- made me feel quite uncomfortable." Shah told the NDTV news channel she felt she should report the driver to the company. "I had a bad feeling about him," she said. US-based Uber has been banned from operating in Delhi after the passenger in her mid-20s accused Yadav, 32, of raping her when she fell asleep in his cab on Friday night. On Tuesday it emerged that Yadav, who is now in custody, was working for the company while on bail on multiple charges including assault, robbery and rape. Yadav was charged with molestation in 2003,
