Swimming on my down Time

Now that I am not working, I have lots of down time. There is no reason to stay in the crib and watch TV or poorly made Bigfoot videos when I have a beautiful swimming pool down the lane. The weather has been fantastic and the water is warming up.still a little cool. Swimming is fun and its great exercise. It is non weight bearing which makes it easy on the joints. That is important when you are getting older and are still a little heavy. Anyway, its just fun. Check it out.

North Shore Pool new Jumbotron

It lets you know the time I have become a workout fanatic. My health is improving (the most important thing on my plate right now) and I am feeling great. I noticed the new jumbo HD TV on the pool deck Tuesday when  was dong a HIIT workout. Other then keeping time, I could not see what functional use it had

Training Long Course

I am blessed to be a member of a Long Course Pool. The Bobby Hicks staff is very friendly and cooperative. The meet I have entered is in June in Sarasota. I hope to be ready for the famous keg party after Saturday's festivities

Tired but Happy

I worked hard for this It was freezing cold this morning at the North Shore Pool as the sun came up over the SPM Masters swim meet. The wind was blowing which gave warming up swimmers a bone chill as they exited the pool. Everyone had on overcoats. You can't do much about the weather. I was eager to swim my races because the pool was the warmest spot around. It was cold man and this is an overcoat I just got home and I am very tired. Sprinting all out has done me in. Don't worry, I am very happy. I would not have missed this experience for the world. People talk about "bucket list" nowadays. Those thing usually involve travel. How about an athletic event. You can't buy a ticket to get there. You have to put in the work. A view from behind the starting blocks You can see the ribbons I earned. AND I EARNED THEM! Nobody can take this away from me. There is a Long Course meet in June in Sarasota. I have already started training for that one. See ya...

The courage to try

Moments after my swim under the lights I did it! I swam in the longest running United States Masters Swimming meet in America (47 years) in St. Petersburg today. After training for 11 months, it was time to do it "for real." This photo is me after I took third place in my age group (55-59) in the 200 yard freestyle. Let me give you the back story. A year ago I was in the emergency room with dangerously high blood pressure. The medicine was not working. I felt awful and did not know what to do. There is a lot left to do in life and I was not ready to check out yet. The doctor said it was up to me now and he recommended a change of diet and aerobic exercise. There were no more new fangled pharmacological that could save me - it was up to me. You can see how dark the skies are getting The great tennis player Jimmy Connors was once asked what was the best exercise. He said it was the one you will do. Swimming is the one thing that I will do. As Arnold Schwarzenegger s...

Hard Training for swim meet

I am entered in the St Petersburg Masters swimming Championship meet April 2-3, 2016. It is a regional meet with swimmers coming in from many states. There will be former Olympic swimmers competing in age groups. It is the longest running Masters meet in America. Keep in mind, I am not fast. I am trying hard. My only goal is to finish each event without being disqualified. Just finishing will be victory for me. Consider I could have died over a year ago, this is my gold medal. This is all I'm focused on right now. It is very important to me. I'm already getting nervous. Wish me well.

SWIM SPEED WORKOUTS (cab drivers need exercise)

I have been swimming for exercise since April of last year. I used to have a fast freestyle but not anymore. I have been making slow progress. Yesterday, I bought the Sheila Taormina course on speed freestyle. I love it. I do have fast twitch muscle and power. Her course will develop all of that. I will dedicate myself for the 16 weeks and my results will be on this Blog. I will give 100%. Let's see where that Leeds.

You did not know I was a coach?

What chlorine does ti your hair

I say its blonde. My friends say its grey. Either way, it is no longer the brown hair I had when I started working out last April. I am stepping up my training in a more focused way because I want to race in a Masters meet in the Spring. My race pace training program should have me ready. posted from Bloggeroid

A champions workout

I am currently using SwimPlan.com for all my workouts. The algorithms in their computer generated workouts peg me as a beginner (100 free repeats between 2:25 - 2:40 with 20 seconds rest). The next level is slow. Geeez. I do have a Li f way to go but I am enjoying the journey. I used to be a breaststroker so I had the program kick out a cool workout for me today. THE GOLD MEDAL WORKOUT PLAN

Bob Bowman (the coach of Michael Phelps) has revolutionized swim training. Gone are the days of endless lap swimming. The modern approach is to work different energy systems, mostly at the high aerobic range. He collaborated on an article in Men's Health magazine where he outlined how a recreational swimmer could get into great shape. I have modeled what I'm doing after this plan. Explaining the system The page below is the week by week program. Later Bowman explains that by changing distances and pace he's working all of the body's energy systems. But the prime target, for both Phelps's three-hour workout and my Mini Me version, is the upper aerobic range. Bowman does relatively little slow and steady lap work; likewise, he's leery about too much sprinting, which can break young swimmers' bodies down. His forte is miles of brisk tempo work, extending his swimmers' aerobic ranges so they can handle more distance and speed without going into oxyg...

1500 meter freestyle long course

In an attempt to save my life, I started a conditioning program five weeks ago. I am swimming three days a week, and lifting weights twice. When I started, I could barely finish one lap. I am following a conditioning program designed by Michael Phelps coach. I trains three energy systems - endurance/lactate threshold/speed. I can't believe how fit I am getting. I feel wonderful when the workouts are over and I look forward to them. This photo is me after finishing 1500 meters in a long course pool on endurance day. That is 30 laps. This has got to be having a positive effect on my cardio. Wow! posted from Bloggeroid
