Port Tampa bank once robbed by Bonnie & Clyde

In the ghost town area of Port Tampa is an old building that is now a public library. The residents that live here may be unaware of the history of this building, and the Port of Tampa.
This building used to be a bank and it held all the payroll money for the ship and dock workers. That is why it became a robbery target for Bonnie and Clyde, who were depression era bank robbers.
Their plan was fairly sound with the port not having been annexed by Tampa and a dirt road being the only way in and out. It worked. They got away with it. Too bad for the workers.
There was no FDIC back then and I imagine many guys did not get paid that week. Conditions were hard back then, much less, to have it compounded by being broke.
Port Tampa has a rich history that I am now researching.

  1. Brings back a memory about port Tampa. Back in the early 70's there was a bar that a guy named George. All of the dock workers drank there. It was located where the cruise liners load up now. It has been said that George retired a multimillionaire. I know he got plenty of my meager wages. At the time I drove a pickup truck for La La Produce out of Ybor. Tim check out that company. Angel The Rescued Kitten

I have a new and wonderful friend. Her name is Angel. George found her on his way home at 3 in the morning running around on the elevated span of highway 19 in Clearwater. He pulled over and pulled out of a storm drain. He took her home and knocked on my door. He has two cats and wanted me to keep her overnight until he could find a neighbor to take her. I fell in love with her. She is now my best friend and keeps me company for I live alone. It's not fair that so much cuteness can be crammed into such a little thing.

RETIRED..what did you expect?

I have retired from taxi driving for good. I turned the keys in and walked away from 24 years on the streets. In a way, like Ronald Reagan said, the taxi business walked away from me. Anyway, I am home and doing nothing but getting caught up on a bunch of personal stuff. I am loving it. Check out this video about how I spend most mornings now. I have applied to work for Lyft and was approved, of course. I should be getting a new car next week and will be driving for them. Ride share has become the new taxi companies and they deliver what I am looking for. I have two monthly checks coming in which are enough to live off of. So don't worry about me. Its just that I was not exactly ready to retire but the circumstances gave me no choice. It does feel good, by the way.

Hula Girl and a myopic cab driver

I was told today that I had a "myopic" viewpoint of taxi driving. Since I have been driving for 20 years, I believe I am in a position to make that determination. You have to be short sighted in today's market. Years of a bad economy and the rise of Uber, have made it that way. Cab drivers operate out of a sense of urgency. Our needs are so immediate, how can you be future oriented? I can. And it has nothing to do with the cab industry. I focus on things that give meaning to my life. Photography, swimming, Bigfoot, my blog give long range meaning, and slow me to set goals. Cab driving does not. My Hula girl is a big believer in American potential. You can dream big, and achieve big in America. All is possible....just not cab driving. Not the road to success. posted from Bloggeroid

Xzanthia has moved away

Xzanthia I found this on an old TBT. If you remember back in 2007, I had the honor of shooting Xzanthia in an art nude shoot. The recession hit and I could not keep up my craft. She was a fantastic model and artist and held events at her fathers nudist resort. I now know now she has moved onto other things. I wish her well. Her and her father were top notch. "Through festivals, parties and an artists’-colony sense of camaraderie, the Pasco County performance artist created an enclave of creativity and diversity in Tampa Bay at the  Riverboat Nudist Colony  in Land O’Lakes. Her work with the band  Impotent Sea Snakes , her XBash Music Festival  and her legendary  foam parties have made her a fixture of Tampa Bay’s underground art scene. But after years spent working to connect and create a community, she has decided to leave. Citing a desire to de-complicate her life and focus on her art, XZanthia is moving away. She remains positive about the Tampa Bay ...

What happened to Tommy Duncan and Sticks of Fire blog?

The image below is a 2005 TBT article I still have about the Tampa blogger scene. The big boy was Tommy Duncan. He stopped blogging around 2008, and was never seen again. Here is what Creative Loafing said about that era: "The 40-something blogger founded the most-often-cited independent Tampa Bay news blog, Sticks of Fire, in Feb. 2004, and the site, without much financial assistance from advertising, is still going strong today with a stable of more than a dozen regular contributors. In 2005, Duncan was featured in a tbt* story about the young lions of the local Internet. Today, about half of them have fallen by the wayside or (in the case of famous sexy blogger Rachel Moran) moved to New Jersey. Duncan keeps on posting. The local digital scene has grown, but he's not sure it has improved in quality."

Where's Tim?

I have been in the woods camping with friends. We had no idea last weekend would be the hottest Halloween on record in Florida. This fire is beautiful but it only made things hotter. I have also been swimming. Now, the pool is extending its hours and I will be able to work out six days a week. My training program is coming along and its now the most enjoyable aspect of my day. posted from Bloggeroid

Images from the streets

These images from downtown Tampa were taken on the day I ran out of gas. They tell a story about prosperity in this econ omy. This is Joe who helped me when I ran out of gas. He is a mechanic at the United Cab of Tampa shop.
