Hillsborough County will use the courts to shut down Uber

These cocksuckers will soon be gone from Florida
Hillsborough County has tried everything to get Uber and Lyft off the streets. Now it wants a judge to shut them down.
The county on Wednesday joined cities such as Las Vegas, Miami and Portland, Ore., in calling for the court system's support in the ongoing battle between regulators and ride-share companies.
Board members voted during Wednesday's Public Transportation Commission meeting to pursue injunctive relief against Uber and Lyft after both ride-share companies failed to comply with a cease-and-desist letter issued at the end of December.
The companies use smartphone apps that allow riders to summon nearby drivers who use their own cars. Both argue that they are technology companies, not transportation companies, and thus don't fall under the rules administered by the PTC.
Temple Terrace City Council member David Pogorilich made the motion, calling it the next logical step after neither company altered its operations following receipt of the cease-and-desist letter.
The difference with injunctive relief, executive director Kyle Cockream said, is that an injunction has the weight of a court order behind it.
"The only thing that has initiated any productive talks at all, from my research, from Portland to California, to here in Florida, has been a court order to say, 'Stop,' " Cockream said.
Tampa City Council member Frank Reddick opposed the motion, citing the possibility of additional court costs.
Uber spokeswoman Kaitlin Durkosh said the PTC was "engaging in extreme measures to protect the status quo" instead of supporting innovation and opportunity.
"The PTC's actions are deplorable, and intentionally seek to disrupt the lives of thousands of people who depend on our technology to make a living and move around safely," Durkosh said.
This is not the first legal option the commission has pursued against the ride-share companies, which regulators argue fall under their jurisdiction as providing for-hire vehicles.
A hearing officer ruled in favor of the commission last fall, fining Uber and saying its vehicles are largely functioning as taxicabs. Uber appealed the ruling, and the action is stalled in the 4th District Court of Appeal.
A similar hearing for Lyft takes place Monday morning, when the company will contest tickets it received from PTC investigators last year.
Investigators have also issued tickets ranging from $100 to $500 to nearly 100 drivers, Cockream said. But because Uber and Lyft offer to pay the citations for the drivers, it hasn't proved to be a strong deterrent.
Some jurisdictions, such as Miami, have impounded the drivers' vehicles, but the PTC has yet to take such actions.
Leaders of the taxi industry celebrated quietly after the motion passed Wednesday, slapping each other on the back and whispering excited congratulations.
County Commissioner Ken Hagan said that although he thinks "there is no question this technology is the way of the future," something has to be done to force Uber and Lyft to cooperate and take part in negotiations.
"I, for one, am not going to tolerate just ignoring our laws and refusing to comply," Hagan said.

What happened to Tommy Duncan and Sticks of Fire blog?

The image below is a 2005 TBT article I still have about the Tampa blogger scene. The big boy was Tommy Duncan. He stopped blogging around 2008, and was never seen again. Here is what Creative Loafing said about that era: "The 40-something blogger founded the most-often-cited independent Tampa Bay news blog, Sticks of Fire, in Feb. 2004, and the site, without much financial assistance from advertising, is still going strong today with a stable of more than a dozen regular contributors. In 2005, Duncan was featured in a tbt* story about the young lions of the local Internet. Today, about half of them have fallen by the wayside or (in the case of famous sexy blogger Rachel Moran) moved to New Jersey. Duncan keeps on posting. The local digital scene has grown, but he's not sure it has improved in quality."

Happy Hillary Halloween

Is there anything scarier than Hillary. Some would say Donald Trump, perhaps. My friend set this up on his porch and I thought it was pretty cool. It's not really a political statement, it's just trying to show humor. Keep in mind, that we do live in an era where people seem to have lost their sense of humor. Anyway, if he done it with Donald Trump I would have still laughed. Happy Halloween!

The homeless in Tampa

I see it every day in Tampa. They seem to be at every intersection. Their pleas for help are drawn on the back of cardboard and they seem as common as the traffic lights themselves. Who are these people? What led them to the streets? Should I give them money? Whatever is going on in America is driving people to the street corners, and in Florida, the broiling afternoon sun to try and survive. Some people subscribe to the Urban Myth of the homeless guy “Flying a Sign” and making a couple hundred a day and then going home to his spread in the suburbs. I don’t know about that. Flying a sign does not seem to be a very profitable activity, considering the competition today. Some people believe we should give them a bag with some lame ass crackers and directions to a social center inside instead of money. I think the condition that exist today cannot be solved by directions to a county office. It is more chronic than that A few years ago, I considered these people to be bums. Nowadays, ...

I was on a radio show

I was on the "Squatch Detective" radio show last night. Steve Kills is the host and the one that blew the lid on the 2008 Bigfoot in the freezer hoax. Steve wanted me in the show because my fame and reputation is spreading. I do more work then the FINDING BIGFOOT show in Animal Planet and I've found more evidence. I will put up the show on this blog when Steve releases the archives. posted from Bloggeroid

Cigar City Cabbie

Go to www.timfasano.com I heard United Cab was going to sue Uber and the HCPTC. I heard the drivers were going to sue Uber, Tampa Airport, HCPTC and others. Frankly, I am tired of hearing all this shit. Nobody really gives a fuck about this massive gypsy cab company. My only hope may be Donald Trump. I read that there are now over 1 million Uber drivers nationwide. That is an enormous figure. I think the only reason these people get this gig is because there are no jobs in the country that are worth a shit. I think what most of these drivers want is a good job with benefits. Perhaps, if that stuff was out there, the number of dumb shits doing the Uber gig would go way down. I know the ad says "get your side-hustle on." There is no hustle to what they do. Hustle is what I do on a daily basis to make my money. I have to ad lib the entire day and make opportunities happen. Sorry Uber scum...waiting for a ping is not a "hustle." Just keep working for your 50 c...

Finally some cool weather

It should be very comfortable and dry in Tampa for the next 7 days. This is what I have been waiting for. Time to put some Irish cream in my afternoon coffee. The Tampa Tribune ran a headline article the other day asking what happened to winter. I don't know that but it might make up for it in spades. posted from Bloggeroid

Las Vegas Taxi Shots

My new blog about Vegas taxi There is a rule of the jungle "adapt or perish." I try to live by that in how I approach taxi driving. Dynamics change and you must be attuned to that and work in different ways. Uber presents something, however, that I can't adjust to. They have taken just too much from us. I don't know if I want to continue living in Tampa now. In the service industry, you can only make real money four months out of the year. The good news is today is the beginning of that four month run. The airport will be my only hope. I don't have it in me to keep going on after that, especially in the face of Uber. They have devastated the good street business we have had. This is a secret I did not want to revel to my readers. I will now. Its over. White people who do not want blacks to pick them up, have won. Uber riders can now get their Lilly white guy or girl to pick them up. Have fun. Uber will take that cease and desist letter from PTC and wipe their ...

Live Earth concert not about Uber or Bigfoot

This post was from 2007 about the "Live Earth" concert sponsored by Al Gore. It was all crap then and still based on false science such as UFO's and Bigfoot: What world do these people live in? These are aboriginals who opened up Al Gore's LIVE EARTH concert world wide. I'm still not getting it. I mean, does the chick on the right drive an SUV and have a cell phone in her purse? What is with this desire to live in a world with no modern conveniences or science or toilet paper. Al Gore has done a fantastic job in organizing this event to highlight global warming. The mistake he is making is assuming that man is causing it. Let me explain. On one side you have the SCIENTIFIC METHOD. This method is how scientist explain how their theories can be verified or falsified before any real research gets underway. If you cannot explain how to prove your own theory, perhaps more work needs to be done on it. On the other side, you have AD HOC   science. This is wh...

Getting out of the cab

The big mistake many taxi drivers make is not getting out of the cab. Exercise is important and walking is good cardio. S treadmill is boring but going out into natural allows me to truck for miles. I may not find Bigfoot but I'm getting good exercise.
