Total Solar Eclipse from Newport News, Virginia, March 7, 1970

They called it "The eclipse of the century." The anticipation leading up to it was immense. The east coast of the United States was going to go under totality from this solar eclipse. I remember as a kid how excited I was to be able to see and photography, a total eclipse of the sun. At that age, I really did not know how fortunate I was. I would learn that in life, we are almost always more fortunate than we think. Not something my 13 year old brain could fathom at that time.

It was a Saturday and the family gathered in the front yard to watch the event. I also noticed most of the neighbors were out in their front yards as well. How can you beat an eclipse going right over your own neighborhood? Plus, I was young, strong, and thought life would last forever. Now I'm an old man on heart medicine. If there's a lesson in all of this...don't live life vicariously. Live in the moment. Take advantage of what you have today. Like eclipses, there may not be a next time.

Most of the neighborhoods in Newport News were recently developed to provide housing for the exploding military industry that the Tidewater area was known for. They sort of had that prefabricated look. Many home owners were of the WW11 generation but their kids were absolute baby boomers.

I sort of miss those times. Society and culture had more continuity then. I'm not so sure over the decades we have improved on that. Most people valued family and security. It was really a great time to grow up. A few months earlier, we had watched man first walk on the moon, now this celestial event. Life seemed boundless. The possibilities were endless.

I remember going out on a cold winter night and seeing the display of the cosmos up above. There was little light pollution then and the sky seemed so vast. Since Star Trek was on prime time TV, it seemed that type of future was possible. My father showed me one night the trail of a satellite as it made its way across the night sky. I looked with amazement and wonder at it. I was so ready to be experiencing this eclipse.

With the technology of the times, I did a decent job of filming the eclipse it with an 8 mm camera. My father helped me use a welders glass attached to the outside of a cereal box for this makeshift device. The camera was inside the box. My theory that blocking out all ambient light would make a better image.

Everything went right that day, including the weather. It was a late winter day probably in the 60's. Felt good and got even colder during totality. I remember the diamond ring and Bailey's Beads on both ends on lunar contact. And just like that - it was gone. But the memories of that day remain.

Research tells me the totality lasted 93 seconds from our vantage point. Not long but long enough.

This image is of the eclipse that day in Newport News. The star to the left is Venus.

Be cautious of flaggers

Always use caution when picking up flaggers All taxi drivers need to be cautious of flaggers. When you see a stranger on the sidewalk, make sure you go by your gut before you let the person in your taxi. Who knows what may await you if you don't go by the "gut." Don't be tempted by a pretty lady. You may be surprised. Just to be fair about the matter...its not raining!!

Redlining practices of Uber and Lyft exclude Black People

Uber and Lyft are companies formed in Lilly white silicon valley, by Lilly white computer geeks, who would not know what the hood looked like even if they ventured into Oakland. They have put together a business model that is for white people, and excludes blacks, and most poor people. Their intent is to only cheery pick the best, and richest fares in any community, and Redline the hood and poor areas.   This is easily done by allowing the drivers to not only choose where they work, but allow them to choose who they will pick up. The driver can rate the customer and, then, nobody will pick them up. If the rider does not tip (which is cultural and common with inner city people), they will get a bad rating and no Uber or Lyft guy will pick them up. I must pick them up even if they don't tip. A typical attitude of a Lyft rider is like the comment left on this site.  You have to accept the new and ever changing world of technology and what people are comfortable with. M...

Dana Young is a Liar or very confused about Uber

A very bad person with no honor or integrity I attended a meeting at the hockey arena downtown which was attended by all the Tampa Bay area state senators and representatives. In attendance was one Dana Young (R). When it was her time to speak, so told a story about a young women that was being raped. While the college student was being sexually assaulted, the student hit the Uber app on her phone and the police now knew the GPS coordinates of her location. What MS. Young did not disclose was that it happened on the UCLA campus and that it was an UBER DRIVER THAT WAS RAPING HER! "As students prepare to return to college, one thing female students cannot go without is caution. Assaults, especially sexual assaults, are a haunting part of daily life for so many students. Uber has made that nightmare even more of a reality . We tell our students that getting a driver when they’ve had too much to drink is the responsible course of action — it’...

Why I am not using the "www.tampataxishots.net" anymore...can you help?

I received a warning from Google that Blogger hosted blogs using a private URL will not be HTTP protected anymore. I do not really know what that means and if I really need it. Below is what a search found..Does anyone know anything about this? HTTPS  (also called  HTTP over  TLS , [1] [2]   HTTP over SSL , [3]  and  HTTP Secure [4] [5] ) is a  protocol  for  secure  communication over a  computer network  which is widely used on the  Internet . HTTPS consists of communication over  Hypertext Transfer Protocol  (HTTP) within a connection encrypted by  Transport Layer Security or its predecessor, Secure Sockets Layer . The main motivation for HTTPS is  authentication  of the visited  website  and protection of the  privacy  and  integrity  of the exchanged data. In its popular deployment on the internet, HTTPS provides authentication of the website and associated...

Sleeping with the enemy

I sort of stick out in this sea of pink I always seem to get on TV. This is Tim Fasano (in the yellow shirt with camera) sitting in the room full of Lyft and Uber drivers. Did you ever feel really alone? These rideshare people are operating an illegal business that is cutting into my livelyhood, and I wanted the Hillsborough County Commission to know it. The Lyft drivers are a bunch of punks and  kids who have never worked a day in their lives. They will get whats coming to them. How do you spell douchebags? You will see me in the video shown on the local news.

Another fare killer

I saw this at Tampa airport this morning. Good, another hack thinking transportation is their way out of the trailer park. This is just a fact. The Tampa Bay area cannot support this many vehicles for hire. What is Express Taxi anyway?

Bigfoot meets Ron Jeremy

Rictor Riolo (star of Spike TV Bigfoot Bounty and Las Vegas radio personality) found the "big furry guy!" Rictor is a gay artist who does erotic art. He included me in one of works. Look below. Tim, Rick, Tom, and Sharon Rick Dyer is a big game hunter and a long time friend of mine (we talk daily on the phone and he even came to Florida to visit me with his wife and kids) He also lives in Las Vegas and is now making the rounds on CNN, FOX, and other world news outlets about his team killing Bigfoot. The shooting was filmed by the BBC with the eminent British director Morgan Matthews while filming a documentary. All is on HF video. You can look this up on Google

Modern taxi tech

This is Dave. He is a tech guy that wires taxi cabs with GPS, computers, verphone, routers, and more. We have a state of the art IPhone app that United Cab pioneered. Uber has nothing on us. Except, we have legal drivers, a fact Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn ignores, and should be impeached for supporting lawless business. This guy has not heard the last of this. Mechanics today at cab companies don't just change the oil. We us, they are tech wizards. As you can see, I had a glitch the other day, and Dave got me up and running. posted from Bloggeroid

RETIRED..what did you expect?

I have retired from taxi driving for good. I turned the keys in and walked away from 24 years on the streets. In a way, like Ronald Reagan said, the taxi business walked away from me. Anyway, I am home and doing nothing but getting caught up on a bunch of personal stuff. I am loving it. Check out this video about how I spend most mornings now. I have applied to work for Lyft and was approved, of course. I should be getting a new car next week and will be driving for them. Ride share has become the new taxi companies and they deliver what I am looking for. I have two monthly checks coming in which are enough to live off of. So don't worry about me. Its just that I was not exactly ready to retire but the circumstances gave me no choice. It does feel good, by the way.

National Taxi strike called for October 26, 2014 against Uber & Lyft

Following the crowd is the opposite of the Uber Man...They want your mind...don't let them have it! There is more at stake then a ride to work. The battle for man's mind has begun. The Internet has made many things possible and reacting with incomplete information has had a debilitating effect on peoples behaviour and mental acuity. The ability to assess facts accurately has been diminished. When wide swaths of hipsters chose to use a ride share company because it has a slick app, without considering the consequences to society, then harm is being done. Ignoring that modern society is structured by law - they proceed anyway. This course must be redirected Back in the dark ages, villagers and townspeople would often react to a rumor and then take action swiftly to bring justice upon the presumed guilty party without waiting for the authorities to resolve it. The more emotionally attached people were to the crime, the less real or confirmed information they needed to follow...
