Looking for love


I had a call this morning at 3:00 am at the City Side lounge (gay bar) in South Tampa for Kim (I thought it might be the blogger). I rolled up and told the valet I was there for Kim, but they loaded a dude in the cab. It turned out his name was Ken. I took him to his apartment.

On the way home he said “I wish I were straight.” “Why?” I asked. “Then I won’t be alone anymore.” He said. He was not a bad looking guy, so I wondered what the problem was. He explained to me that it probably was easier for gays to get laid then straights, but it seems they have the same problems in finding love that straights have. He wanted to settle down. Um…That’s a tough one. Are people hooking up long term anymore?

That seems difficult to do now; it’s as if our society is changing. I mean, not even straight people are getting married today (Gays are not allowed). There doesn’t seem to be a real need for it. Out of wedlock births are celebrated by the media. Women are independent (A good thing). Society seems tolerant to many thing that were once taboo.

Don’t get me wrong, our society has made giant strides in some areas for the good. For example, I remember a time if someone was seeing a shrink or going to AA or was gay, you did not tell the neighbors. Now people can be open about these things. I just think we don’t have to be tolerant towards everything.

I really could not help this mixed up guy about love. I only know that when it happens, you will know it and it will not be forced. If you are looking for sex, however, that is everywhere.

As a cab driver, I see the sex industry everywhere in Tampa. Getting laid should not be a problem. At what cost? Trust me, the people who work and patronize these places look lost. They look like they would give it all up for someone who really loves them. Take the stripper at the Seven Seas that I take home every Saturday night. There is a real sadness in her eyes. I can see them in the rear view mirror. There seems to be a real emptiness in everyone. Sex for sale does little to abate that.

It seems the internet is where people are going nowadays. Just don’t get burned on a scam. I have a friend who got burned twice on the Russian Bride scam. He was so lonely and vulnerable that he sent thousands to Moscow to pay for transport after striking up an internet relationship. She never came to Tampa but kept the money.

Have you seen all those commercials for E-harmony? I wonder how much that cost.

I hope my City Side guy finds love. We are all in a tough spot.

Stuck in the mud and a ripoff tow

Kevin and I went to a walkthrough at a nature preserve. It was full of wildlife and we even found an abandoned hunting cabin from decades ago. That was there long before civilization found its way to north Hillsborough county. I'm glad we found the cabin because it began to rain like crazy. It rained for a good half hour before we could finish the hike. We then went as far as we could but much of the trails were flooded. You see I have boots on. When we got back to the cars, there was standing water for we were in the grass. I started the cab and buried it in the mud. You should have been there. You would have laughed your ass off. After waiting 2.5 hours for the tow, he winched me on to the parking lot and charged $100. I found out the charge should have been $45. I think the company will dispute this. FUCK UBER

Listen, you Uber fuckers, you screwheads. You are stealing my shit. I tried to be rational (What's that?). But not now. I am a man who will not take it anymore. A long trip out of the airport

I was the first one sitting on the deck at Tampa International Airport when Mack, the starter, called me down to pick up my fare. There is a lot of anticipation when you are rolling down. You have no idea where the fare is going and is the time spent waiting going to justify a short fare, which drivers hate. I know people have to get places but most of the time when they are going long, they find another way. When they are going short, they apologize by saying "they told me its real close." Thanks for rubbing it in guy. This fare today was not analogizing for nothing. He had to get south of Sarasota and he had cash in hand! Lets go. I'm your man. It seems he works for an auto dealership out of Ohio and needed to pick up a truck and drive it back to the Buckeye State. The estimate Mack gave him was $180. He did not bat an eye (its only short fares that complain). All I had to do was figure the fastest way to get there. That's when it hit me....I would have to cross ...

What Lyft and Uber will take from the Tampa taxi business

A lyft car at the Iconic sign on Florida ave downtown Tampa I have been a hack in Tampa Florida since 1995. Unlike the estimated 50% of Americans that hate their jobs, I have never had a day when I did not feel like going to work. Certainly, the last few years  have not been fun because the economy fell apart like a three dollar watch. However, economies are like tides and this one is on the rebound, at a snail's pace. I would like to thank Mr. Obama for that but that would not be fair. The economy is recovering despite any fiscal policy of his. That being said - there are challenges. My job is inherently difficult. We face strange and deranged people street level on a daily basis. Taxi companies in Tampa (which are regulated) must serve the general population. We have no choice. Short fares, drunk fares, people going to buy drugs (they don't tell you that) we must pick up. Don't get me wrong, there are business people, beautiful women, great trippers, and long haul...

Chaos at the airport

What happens when 9,000 people from Ohio State want cabs at the same time because they need to get to the Buckeye cruise? Meltdown. There were no car rentals available at TIA and our starter was gone. The airport director was out trying to organize the plaintiff hoards. For drivers, this was awesome. Its good to have people approaching your cab like a third world flash mob. This beats the help out of sitting around in the scorching heat of July, with nothing to do. Lets hope this keeps up.

National Taxi strike called for October 26, 2014 against Uber & Lyft

Following the crowd is the opposite of the Uber Man...They want your mind...don't let them have it! There is more at stake then a ride to work. The battle for man's mind has begun. The Internet has made many things possible and reacting with incomplete information has had a debilitating effect on peoples behaviour and mental acuity. The ability to assess facts accurately has been diminished. When wide swaths of hipsters chose to use a ride share company because it has a slick app, without considering the consequences to society, then harm is being done. Ignoring that modern society is structured by law - they proceed anyway. This course must be redirected Back in the dark ages, villagers and townspeople would often react to a rumor and then take action swiftly to bring justice upon the presumed guilty party without waiting for the authorities to resolve it. The more emotionally attached people were to the crime, the less real or confirmed information they needed to follow...

BATS TAXI undercuts Tampa

I had a ride to the Tradewinds resort and we passed Bats Taxi on St. Petersburg Beach. I had to direct my fares attention from their marquee because the advertising a rate to Tampa International Airport of $54. My meter was already over $75 and I did not want to field questions about our higher rate. What I hear is Bats has the beach sowed up. They make their money on volume. Cool. I just hope their lease payment is lower then ours.

Bay and Beach taxi van service

Working hard to secure Tampa airport,cruise and hotel service, it seems now Bay and Beach taxi are now using vans with horse trailers (you can see the trailer behind the van). They can move more people and luggage with those. The picture here was taken at the airport and a ton of people got off. Nancy has modern ideas about customer service , and how to run a fleet. Who's picking you up?

She would never make it on the mean streets. She will stay with the craft beer drinkers and poor people suffer. People like the lady above is what is wrong with the rideshare concept. This women will never go into the bad part of town. Poor people in society suffer enough, now, they won't even be able to get rides. The cheery pickers have arrived. Cab driving will now be an exclusive right of passage for hipsters, on the same level of Starbucks coffee, skinny jeans, and alternative rock with craft beers, and the other sacraments of hipsterism. Be cautious of flaggers

Always use caution when picking up flaggers All taxi drivers need to be cautious of flaggers. When you see a stranger on the sidewalk, make sure you go by your gut before you let the person in your taxi. Who knows what may await you if you don't go by the "gut." Don't be tempted by a pretty lady. You may be surprised. Just to be fair about the matter...its not raining!!
