The courage to try

Moments after my swim under the lights
I did it! I swam in the longest running United States Masters Swimming meet in America (47 years) in St. Petersburg today. After training for 11 months, it was time to do it "for real." This photo is me after I took third place in my age group (55-59) in the 200 yard freestyle. Let me give you the back story.

A year ago I was in the emergency room with dangerously high blood pressure. The medicine was not working. I felt awful and did not know what to do. There is a lot left to do in life and I was not ready to check out yet. The doctor said it was up to me now and he recommended a change of diet and aerobic exercise. There were no more new fangled pharmacological that could save me - it was up to me.

You can see how dark the skies are getting
The great tennis player Jimmy Connors was once asked what was the best exercise. He said it was the one you will do. Swimming is the one thing that I will do. As Arnold Schwarzenegger said about swimming...1) you can wear a speedo 2) Get a tan 3) Everyone is almost naked! That's the one I like.

I was off to the pool.

Problem. I could barely finish one 25 yard lap. The early days were really a struggle. I was soon able to swim a straight 500 yards and do about a mile total in my workouts. I was really making progress and my health was improving. In fact, my blood work now is fantastic and I have been off gout medicine for a year with no flare ups. How cool is that!

Today, I did the perfect swim. I negative split each 50 in the 200 yard freestyle race (each 50 faster then the one before) and sprinted the final lap home. I looked up and my team (SPM) was cheering for me. I looked up on the jumbo scoreboard where I could see my lane with time and splits. I felt like I had just swam in the Olympic finals! In reality, I had.

My Olympics was to change my lifestyle and focus on health. I set this goal and I accomplished it. I did it on my own and nobody can take this away from me. That is BADASS!!

There was a storm coming and the meet had to be postponed for Sunday. In fact, I was on the blocks for the 100 breaststroke ready to race and they stopped the meet. I'm glad they did for I was in the wrong damn lane and would have been disqualified! Good. I will swim it tomorrow.

What happened to Tommy Duncan and Sticks of Fire blog?

The image below is a 2005 TBT article I still have about the Tampa blogger scene. The big boy was Tommy Duncan. He stopped blogging around 2008, and was never seen again. Here is what Creative Loafing said about that era: "The 40-something blogger founded the most-often-cited independent Tampa Bay news blog, Sticks of Fire, in Feb. 2004, and the site, without much financial assistance from advertising, is still going strong today with a stable of more than a dozen regular contributors. In 2005, Duncan was featured in a tbt* story about the young lions of the local Internet. Today, about half of them have fallen by the wayside or (in the case of famous sexy blogger Rachel Moran) moved to New Jersey. Duncan keeps on posting. The local digital scene has grown, but he's not sure it has improved in quality."

My game against chess master Tom Stroup

Play online chess The game is still in progress but I am playing him even. Tom is rated in the top 2% of all players, so I am happy for such a result so far. He has analyzed the remaining moves and sees this as a possible draw. Don't worry, I can still screw this up. I used the "Donald Trump" opening on him. Since he is a Hillary supporter, he seems befuddled by it. LOL> The game is still in progress but I am playing him even. Tim Now Drives for LYFT...and loving it!

After 24 years of driving taxi for United Cab of Tampa, I am now driving for LYFT. Good call, I think. Ride share has taken over and the taxi companies are going the way of the pay phone and the corner video store.

What Lyft and Uber will take from the Tampa taxi business

A lyft car at the Iconic sign on Florida ave downtown Tampa I have been a hack in Tampa Florida since 1995. Unlike the estimated 50% of Americans that hate their jobs, I have never had a day when I did not feel like going to work. Certainly, the last few years  have not been fun because the economy fell apart like a three dollar watch. However, economies are like tides and this one is on the rebound, at a snail's pace. I would like to thank Mr. Obama for that but that would not be fair. The economy is recovering despite any fiscal policy of his. That being said - there are challenges. My job is inherently difficult. We face strange and deranged people street level on a daily basis. Taxi companies in Tampa (which are regulated) must serve the general population. We have no choice. Short fares, drunk fares, people going to buy drugs (they don't tell you that) we must pick up. Don't get me wrong, there are business people, beautiful women, great trippers, and long haul...

EVIDENCE and CRYPTID FOSSILS in Central Florida

I went back home to Mulberry Florida and went to the Mulberry Phosphate History Museum. It is only about 3 miles from the old family home but never went there. When I was younger, I was not so interested in these matters.

New Go Pro Hero 7 Silver for Christmas

I got a new camera for my arsenal last Christmas. The GoPro Hero 7 Silver will be a huge upgrade to what I am trying to do with my photography. My YouTube channel is taking off and I am now making money with it. I just need to keep putting up fresh content that people will want to watch. This is a video I took and edited as an experiment to see how I could do it.

The Butterfly Garden

This is the bush in the backyard who's flowers seem to be drawing in the butterflies. That is why I am calling it my butterfly garden. It does seem to be only one kind of butterfly but I imagine others will eventually make their way to it. It could be the time of year when everything is blooming.

Slain cab driver worked the hood

Working the hood at night is not good for a cab driver. There is a preponderance of short fares, now shows, laundry, no shows, runners, and angry people, to make it unprofitable, and annoying to the driver. You could work it all night, and not make a dime and be treated like shit the whole time. Was it worth it for Mr. Dooley to work the hood? It sucks that with so little street business, and a flood of third world drivers, forces guys pulling s hack to take risk.

Florida Sasquatch Best of 2019 Winter/Spring

These are some of my clips from earlier in the year while Bigfoot hunting. I am learning the art of documentary film making and employed many techniques in these videos. Florida Sasquatch is the name of my popular YouTube channel.

Art Section Dunedin

I stayed in Dunedin most of the day running short LYFT fares but still made my first level bonus. It does add up after a while for rideshare does have the volume I am looking for..
