How Uber is hurting workers

Robert Reich is an economist who worked in Bill Clinton's cabinet. His problem with Uber and the "shared economy" is no sharing is going on. The worker absorbs all cost and risk, for less than minimum wage.

  1. Moved across the bay?? That is good I guess if you are happy there. Refresh my memory didn't you think when Tom, #123 drove from New Port Richey it was too far to drive. But the gas price is lower today. But heard on the news that the oil is as low as it is going to get. Larry 157

  2. Now on the lighter side with the loss to Tom Brady couldn't happen to a nicer guy. What happened to his 5 game suspicion?? If you watched the game yesterday why didn't he ( Brady )get flagged for the numerous grounding of his passes. Could be like the deflatgate--Larry 157

    1. Yeah you are right about the Super Bowl, but don't the will destroy them. Bronco's have the #1 defense. But I really would like to see the old guy win and get the MVP. Wishful thinking you say well no one thought the Bucs would ever win the Big One either nor would they ever win 6 games in 2015. Later my friend, Larry 157

  5. well, usually I subscribe to Reich opinions, but in this case seems like he is giving room for "shared economy" to survive and prosper in the end........
.....did he sold out to uber?

  6. Interesting piece about George the Ghostbuster....how much does he charge to chase away evil spirits?

Not my place that I want to get 'cleansed' the one right next to mine on the south side...the girl that lived there hanged herself a couple of years ago. Since all these units have basically the same floor plans(I am the dude that lives in the same complex as you) you will be familiar with that big beam over the entrance way to the kitchen area...she put a rope around it stood up in a chair and jumped off. I was home at the time and actually heard the thud...but I had no idea what it was of course. I just remember getting a very bad feeling....anyhow the body wasn't discovered until it started stinking a couple of days later...I thought the oder was from the jungle area just west of the fence where a creek runs through...thought it was a dead animal. Finally a neighbor who had not seen her in a couple of days axed Jim da maintance man to check on her...he opened the door and closed it very quickly..I was observing him...he didnt say a thing ...just went directly to the office and called the police.

Very sad case..the girls mom had died and she also had injured herself at work etc.etc. her boyfriend had dropped her and so on and so forth. A young girl she was...which makes it even worse. I didn't know her well...had only talked to her a few times...but something like that hits you hard.

Another girl moved in there...but I do not think she knows what happened and I do not want to tell her...since she is a nice girl...she might move out. But i kinda feel in a way I should tell her..I mean if it was me I would want someone to tell me...but perhaps its best not to know...I mean most people that live in condos or any kind of housing for that matter rarely knows who else has lived there or what has transpired before you moved in.

Maybe George could chase away the evil spirts from a distance like just circling around...maybe circle around this whole section and chase all the evil spirts out of this neck of the woods...kinda like a mass ghost busting, cleansing and chasing sort of thing....chase all of them outta here. I wonder if that is possible?

I think I will get some holy water and burn some herbs...could not hurt. Maybe sprinkle some on her front porch when she is not home and on her back door step....and all over my unit in case some of them came through the walls and set up shop in here...wouldnt be hard for them to do, I would think...especially since I live wid a crazy woman anyhow. hehheh

Best of luck out there on the back streets of Tampa and stay safe.

What Lyft and Uber will take from the Tampa taxi business

A lyft car at the Iconic sign on Florida ave downtown Tampa I have been a hack in Tampa Florida since 1995. Unlike the estimated 50% of Americans that hate their jobs, I have never had a day when I did not feel like going to work. Certainly, the last few years  have not been fun because the economy fell apart like a three dollar watch. However, economies are like tides and this one is on the rebound, at a snail's pace. I would like to thank Mr. Obama for that but that would not be fair. The economy is recovering despite any fiscal policy of his. That being said - there are challenges. My job is inherently difficult. We face strange and deranged people street level on a daily basis. Taxi companies in Tampa (which are regulated) must serve the general population. We have no choice. Short fares, drunk fares, people going to buy drugs (they don't tell you that) we must pick up. Don't get me wrong, there are business people, beautiful women, great trippers, and long haul...

The Taxi Truman Show

I may have found the escape hatch Regulated Taxi driving is now dead. Uber has taken over. The current situation is no longer tenable for drivers who face an old model of cab leasing, and can no longer continue paying a Pre-Uber lease. Today was the tipping point. This time of year we should be very busy...EXTREMLY BUSY. We are not. It is dead as a doornail with drivers at the airport waiting up to 5 hours to a ride. It should be off the hook. It is for Uber. They pay no fee to the airport, yet they are allowed to operate. I made a good living for years. Transportation was regulated in Hillsborough County. This insured uniformity or rates, insurance, and accountability. But no more. The HCPTC has now allowed a gypsy cab company take over. Uber has not only taken some or part of our business - they have taken it all. This is because they are low balling the market in an attempt to establish a monopoly. They are well on their way to doing that with the compl...

Dana Young is a Liar or very confused about Uber

A very bad person with no honor or integrity I attended a meeting at the hockey arena downtown which was attended by all the Tampa Bay area state senators and representatives. In attendance was one Dana Young (R). When it was her time to speak, so told a story about a young women that was being raped. While the college student was being sexually assaulted, the student hit the Uber app on her phone and the police now knew the GPS coordinates of her location. What MS. Young did not disclose was that it happened on the UCLA campus and that it was an UBER DRIVER THAT WAS RAPING HER! "As students prepare to return to college, one thing female students cannot go without is caution. Assaults, especially sexual assaults, are a haunting part of daily life for so many students. Uber has made that nightmare even more of a reality . We tell our students that getting a driver when they’ve had too much to drink is the responsible course of action — it’...

Getting better

The redness and swelling are going away and I can actually walk now. I just have to stay on the antibiotics and dressing the wound. I should be in rare form soon. You have no idea how bad I've felt.

St. Petersburg Taxi tells the truth about Uber and ride share

Albert is a cab driver that follows the rules and pays his insurance, license, and operation fees Guest post by Albert Zee: Uber problem in Tampa Bay.....Taxi industry has been under siege since 2007-2008 due to economical collapse of 2008, then surge in new taxi cab start ups between 2010-204 which were still mostly operating according to all the rules and regulations prolonged recovery. Then uber came around with "great solution" to our transportation problems and said, what regulations, what commercial insurance, what background checks and what cars (we don't need to own any and our drivers don't need to be regulated because we are "rideshare" company), we will invade and steal the market by offering rides at half a price, we will put all those law obeying "taxi cartels" out of business by creating bogus press releases about advantages of uber, by lying to public, drivers and politicians, they don't know any better any ways. Stuck in the mud and a ripoff tow

Kevin and I went to a walkthrough at a nature preserve. It was full of wildlife and we even found an abandoned hunting cabin from decades ago. That was there long before civilization found its way to north Hillsborough county. I'm glad we found the cabin because it began to rain like crazy. It rained for a good half hour before we could finish the hike. We then went as far as we could but much of the trails were flooded. You see I have boots on. When we got back to the cars, there was standing water for we were in the grass. I started the cab and buried it in the mud. You should have been there. You would have laughed your ass off. After waiting 2.5 hours for the tow, he winched me on to the parking lot and charged $100. I found out the charge should have been $45. I think the company will dispute this. I hope. posted from Bloggeroid

Tampa Bay Downs

I went to the horse races at Tampa Bay Downs Sunday. It had been years since I had been there. Not much had changed except the Daily Racing Form is now 9 bucks. I paid it because I am from the old school, and want more comprehensive information then the track program. It did not seem to do me much good. The horse above was a maiden claiming horse. She had the top jockey and trainer on the track. Even one of the handicappers in the DRF picked the horse. So, I bet her across the board. She came in dead last. I mean I took a photo of her chasing the other horses. They not even in the frame. I actually felt sorry for the horse. Anyway, Tom could not make it, so I only stayed for a few races. I even managed to win a race. As you can see it was a nice day, so I enjoy the sights and sounds of the racetrack. They had a good crowd and most people seemed to be having fun. Of course, at the track, you see the same characters that you find at most tracks. There are the wandering around re...

Travis Kalanick and his false promise of 50,000 jobs in Europe

Its just an app folks In an attempt to make nice with Europe after getting kicked out of Germany, Travis Kalanick stated that Uber creates jobs. In fact, he said it could create 50,000 jobs if transportation authorities would only change their regulations to allow Uber to operate. He said Uber will increase efficiency and reduce emissions. They would be able to do all these wonderful things if European cities would STOP making Uber play by the rules that all forms of transportation much follow. He must think his "app" company is not a taxi company which most municipals are figuring out. Stop this madness. First, I am having a hard time figuring out what Travis means by a job. His claim is they have created 7,500 jobs in San Francisco alone. Those are mostly part time punks that don't want to work at Starbucks or Wall Mart. Kalanick fails to mention the erosion of FULL TIME jobs from hard working men that he is destroying as the vanguard of his Borg like empire r...

The supermoon and love

While I was waiting outside a house in hyde Park early this morning way before sunrise, I noticed this incredible moon. I was wondering if lovers really gazed at the moon and expressed their hopes and dreams. Personally, I never have. The moon doesn't seem all that interesting. Anyway, I pulled out my camera with telephoto and using the window jam of the front door, got this shot. Not to bad. You can see craters and mountains. Why does a man risk everything he has in a game he cannot win? All of us can usually make sense of most things in our life. But the most uncertain thing of all makes us put everything on the line. Love is when we are at our weakest, our most vulnerable. I've lived long enough where I can look back and make certain assessments that would have been impossible to a younger me. I've been rich, poor, up, down all that stuff but nothing beats being in love (yes Ladies...men will trade 10 blonde's with boob  jobs for true love...bank on it). Lat...
