St. Petersburg Taxi tells the truth about Uber and ride share

Albert is a cab driver that follows the rules and pays his insurance, license, and operation fees
Guest post by Albert Zee:

Uber problem in Tampa Bay.....Taxi industry has been under siege since 2007-2008 due to economical collapse of 2008, then surge in new taxi cab start ups between 2010-204 which were still mostly operating according to all the rules and regulations prolonged recovery.

Then uber came around with "great solution" to our transportation problems and said, what regulations, what commercial insurance, what background checks and what cars (we don't need to own any and our drivers don't need to be regulated because we are "rideshare" company), we will invade and steal the market by offering rides at half a price, we will put all those law obeying "taxi cartels" out of business by creating bogus press releases about advantages of uber, by lying to public, drivers and politicians, they don't know any better any ways.

Current situation in result of uber actions,

Taxi market is mostly deregulated, there is oversupply of drivers who struggle to make money, uber drivers bypass uber platform to make extra money, they create gypsy cab companies and advertise on google as legal taxi operators to unaware public, taxi companies are under pressure to keep their cabs rolling, so often they don't require new drivers to pass level 2 background checks because uber doesn't have to do it, most of those start ups from 2010-2014 went rogue and operate without any kind of credentials same like uber drivers operate gypsy cab companies.

THIS IS FUCKING MESS?

By my estimation, 80% of drivers out there operate without commercial insurance or city stickers, 40% of them have criminal record (those good drivers gave up), 10% of drivers are constantly involved in some kind of criminal activity to supplement their income,....

  1. I am not a cab driver with extensive experience, I started in 2004 after my doctor told me to quit doing construction, but I have been around cabs since I can remember, my grandpa and my father were cab drivers in Warsaw, Poland and I witnessed a lot of family things going about taxis and cab driving...you know...things like family conversations about city changing regulations....people not paying fares...valet guys at hotel being dicks ...200 miles trip across Poland paid double by rich westerner, etc
When you are kid, you listen and learn ...My folks probably noticed that I was listening, learning, paying close attention so when I went to high school, they had that family meeting with me and told me...."whatever you do in your life, please don't drive a cab, there is not much money in it and it brings a lot of stress and suffering in the end"
....I kept my word until 2004 when my father passed away and I started to have health problems.....it was easy choice for me, - after a week of driving I felt like a pro...

  2. One of the Results of "taxi war" with uber, lyft and illegal cab companies.
....How dishonest taxi drivers in Pinellas cheat the system while trying to survive competition against uber, lyft...
Taxi meters in Pinellas are unsealed and owners don't care, why would they? if state doesn't care either....
so, drivers rig the meters to 2/3 different rates, one for regulars, second for drunks and tourists and yet another one for price surging on weekend nights or really disoriented tourists who forgot to ask "how much would cost to get from point A to point B"

FUCK UBER

Listen, you Uber fuckers, you screwheads. You are stealing my shit. I tried to be rational (What's that?). But not now. I am a man who will not take it anymore. A man who stands up against the scum, the cunts, the dogs, the filth, the shit. I am a man who stands up. Look at it this way. A man takes a job, you know? And that job - I mean, like that - That becomes what he is. You know, like - You do a thing and that's what you are. Like I've been a cabbie for nineteen years. Ten years at night. I still don't own my own cab. You know why? Because I don't want to. That must be what I want. To be on the night shift drivin' somebody else's cab. You understand? I mean, you become - You get a job, you become the job. One guy lives in a shit hole, another lives on drugs. You pick up a lawyer. Another guy's a doctor. Another guy dies. Another guy gets well. People are born, y'know? Why do you want to drive Uber? You think you can avoid your destiny? You'l...

Joe Lopano forces Uber impact fees at Tampa International Airport which is highway robbery

I don't like being robbed at Tampa  International Airport The real reason Joseph W. Lopano let Uber and Lyft into TPA was he projected an increase in fees collected to be 5.2 million in the next two years. He seemed to view this as a revenue generating opportunity when the taxi companies were only able to come up with about 1.2 million a year. This was more than a reason to violate existing law. Joe Lopano (head of TPA) had a long range plan to soak the public and make a GIANT BONUS for himself. I wonder why he was fired in New York and flamed out in Dallas? Just wondering. The Tampa Bay Business Journal confirmed this fact the other day on their website. I knew he was corrupt and this proves it. Lopano stated that reason he let Uber and Lyft into the airport (violating the contract he had with the taxi companies) is he wanted to provide transportation alternatives to the traveling public. That was pure Bullshit. He simply saw how they could increase revenue long term by bilk...

Hillsborough County bans Uber today as taxi company

The HCPT and Hillsborough County public commission today affirmed Uber is an illegal taxi company and bared them from operating in the Tampa area. This is wonderful news to longtime drivers like me. An Uber attorney asked Hillsborough County to make new rules to fit the trendy ridesharing movement pioneered by his company and Lyft, but was told flatly on Wednesday that Uber is an illegal taxi service. The county's Public Transportation Commission unanimously affirmed that an appointed officer had enough evidence to fine Uber, based in San Francisco, for providing hiring and public taxi services without proper licensing. Uber attorney Drew Sorrell held to the company's argument that it isn't in transportation. As a technology company, it doesn't need to follow transportation regulations as they are written. "There's a perfectly good way to do this, and that is to write the rules so that they fit," said Sorrell, of the Lowndes Drosdick Doster Kantor...

BREAKING: Uber 65¢ a mile in Tampa (how low can you go?)

Uber is screwing their Tampa drivers up the ass. They have lowered their rates 30% to 65 measly cents a mile. Drivers now get 20 bucks from downtown Tampa to St Petersburg... Big deal. Minus gas, time, insurance, maintenance, wear and tear, federal income tax, social security, workman's compensation, and you have what's left in your baby's diaper. In a word: Uber drivers are desperate. This is what one Tampa Uber driver said on the boards: "Uber is a thermometer of what this country has become. We are scavangers.... Everbody is doing this UBER CRAP because there is only one reality, THERE IS NO JOB or just FEW JOBS out there. This country can measure the desperation of its people with UBER, like the economist who measure the economics of the world by the McDonald's Big Mac, same concept"

HCPT talks to Uber and Lyft drivers and passengers...WHY!?

This is what we should be doing in Tampa...Paris taxi drivers protest The makes no sense. We are going on another summer and the HCPTC is still negotiating and giving these Uber scum a forum. Why Goddamit! What part of illegal do you fuck heads at the PTC not understand? Don't you realize that your need of Viagra is going to kill off major industries! Perhaps its time the drivers took it to the streets. Remember Jimmy Hoffa

What happened to Tommy Duncan and Sticks of Fire blog?

The image below is a 2005 TBT article I still have about the Tampa blogger scene. The big boy was Tommy Duncan. He stopped blogging around 2008, and was never seen again. Here is what Creative Loafing said about that era: "The 40-something blogger founded the most-often-cited independent Tampa Bay news blog, Sticks of Fire, in Feb. 2004, and the site, without much financial assistance from advertising, is still going strong today with a stable of more than a dozen regular contributors. In 2005, Duncan was featured in a tbt* story about the young lions of the local Internet. Today, about half of them have fallen by the wayside or (in the case of famous sexy blogger Rachel Moran) moved to New Jersey. Duncan keeps on posting. The local digital scene has grown, but he's not sure it has improved in quality."

4 things you wish you knew about Uber

Is "ridesharing" safe? Who are these amateur uberX drivers and are they properly screened for criminal backgrounds? Do they have proper insurance? And what happens when inevitable accidents occur? Are riders in danger? Uber thinks they're above regulations and oversight. They claim to only be a technology company. But don't be fooled. Here are four Uber myths debunked. They seem to value profit over protecting the public they claim to serve. UberX services and companies like them want all reward and no responsibility. And they will take it, unless we hold them accountable and protect the public's basic right to safety. Vimeo link: https://vimeo.com/109264278 posted from Bloggeroid

Can't buy a fare today

I'm sitting at the Wall Mart at Hillsborough & 15th and can't get a cash fare. It's Friday folks. Let's get going. Just got a bid. This new Blogger app must have changed my luck.

National Taxi strike called for October 26, 2014 against Uber & Lyft

Following the crowd is the opposite of the Uber Man...They want your mind...don't let them have it! There is more at stake then a ride to work. The battle for man's mind has begun. The Internet has made many things possible and reacting with incomplete information has had a debilitating effect on peoples behaviour and mental acuity. The ability to assess facts accurately has been diminished. When wide swaths of hipsters chose to use a ride share company because it has a slick app, without considering the consequences to society, then harm is being done. Ignoring that modern society is structured by law - they proceed anyway. This course must be redirected Back in the dark ages, villagers and townspeople would often react to a rumor and then take action swiftly to bring justice upon the presumed guilty party without waiting for the authorities to resolve it. The more emotionally attached people were to the crime, the less real or confirmed information they needed to follow...

I got rear ended today

A little ding on the left side of rear bumper I stopped for an ambulance today was hit from behind by a lady that was knocked into me by another motorist. The Uber driver that hit her left the scene but we got his tag number. The cops later found him at home and he was charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Basically no damage to my car and I was soon on my way. The Crown Victoria is a pretty tough car. posted from Bloggeroid
