The political decision process on Uber

Today at the hockey arena in downtown Tampa, all of the local Tampa Bay state representatives and senators gathered  for the transportation hearing. What was first and foremost on the agenda was the subject of uber and its relationship to the Tampa Bay community. Both sides offered their reasons many of them anecdotal in nature. (Senator Jeff Brandes from St Petersburg, the one Center in the picture, came across as an arrogant asshole. He was rude and belligerent and combative with all speakers. This is an example of someone who bullied his way into a political position, no doubt. Sorry for the sidebar).

State senator Arthenia Joyner was the best of the lot. She asked the most pointed questions and dug deep into the real issues. She pointed out to the room that seemed surprised to find out that all of the fees that apply to the cab companies by regulation uber has none of that.

There are insurance requirements, licenses and fees, and fees associated with the airport authority, most of these adding cost of upwards of 2 million dollars a year for the operation of the taxi companies in Tampa. Uber skates on these issues.

Senator Joyner pointed out that United and Yellow cab pay monthly fee of $14,000 to the airport just for the right to serve them. In addition, when the cabs are at the airport they have to follow strict rules. Ubet follows NO RULES and picks up at baggage handling (taxis are babanned from there) for their hugh payment,  cabs must pick up on the fringe of the terminal.  airport welcomes Uber for free yet still charges the taxi companies this outrageous fee. This is wrong, and is unfair anti-competitive practices.

It was also brought out that Ubet Driver pass no level 2 background investigations. Their drivers are not fingerprinted by law enforcement therefore, their true identity can never be known for sure. Just go on the internet and search uber drivers arrested and you will see it happens on a daily basis. Uber only does a Google sesearch on drivers.

It seems dangerous people are driving uber. We know drug dealers in Tampa are using / as a Mill for their drug operations. It's the perfect decoy to pull up to somebody's house. Anyway, I had enough of listening to all of this so after 5 hours I left side hurt enough.

For the first time, I think perhaps maybe some progress is going to be made at least some facts in reality was uncovered to a room full of blind people. Oh, I'm talking about the politicians at the table not to the characters that were in the room and insurance specialist.

Before I left, I went into the main auditorium where the Tampa Bay Lightning play hockey. It is quite an arena and I can visualize the Stanley Cup game being played in this building.

The Taxi Truman Show

I may have found the escape hatch Regulated Taxi driving is now dead. Uber has taken over. The current situation is no longer tenable for drivers who face an old model of cab leasing, and can no longer continue paying a Pre-Uber lease. Today was the tipping point. This time of year we should be very busy...EXTREMLY BUSY. We are not. It is dead as a doornail with drivers at the airport waiting up to 5 hours to a ride. It should be off the hook. It is for Uber. They pay no fee to the airport, yet they are allowed to operate. I made a good living for years. Transportation was regulated in Hillsborough County. This insured uniformity or rates, insurance, and accountability. But no more. The HCPTC has now allowed a gypsy cab company take over. Uber has not only taken some or part of our business - they have taken it all. This is because they are low balling the market in an attempt to establish a monopoly. They are well on their way to doing that with the compliance and help of the po

How Uber is hurting workers

Robert Reich is an economist who worked in Bill Clinton's cabinet. His problem with Uber and the "shared economy" is no sharing is going on. The worker absorbs all cost and risk, for less than minimum wage.

St. Petersburg Taxi tells the truth about Uber and ride share

Albert is a cab driver that follows the rules and pays his insurance, license, and operation fees Guest post by Albert Zee: Uber problem in Tampa Bay.....Taxi industry has been under siege since 2007-2008 due to economical collapse of 2008, then surge in new taxi cab start ups between 2010-204 which were still mostly operating according to all the rules and regulations prolonged recovery. Then uber came around with "great solution" to our transportation problems and said, what regulations, what commercial insurance, what background checks and what cars (we don't need to own any and our drivers don't need to be regulated because we are "rideshare" company), we will invade and steal the market by offering rides at half a price, we will put all those law obeying "taxi cartels" out of business by creating bogus press releases about advantages of uber, by lying to public, drivers and politicians, they don't know any better any ways. The Storms of Chance

Once in a great while the storms of change will overshadow the plans of man. That would happen today. A cold wind blew over Tampa Bay this morning, a brief repose from the subtropical heat ever-present most of the year. The cool air felt good on my face and brought my spirits to a new high. I needed a lift. I had a ride out to Boco Ciega which is a beautiful part of the area. I had a scheduled ride of some significance and I felt hopeful. This ride I was on would put some serious money and my pocket. I was excided because I needed a break. Today was going to be a good day. Would I at least have an auspicious start?  It is believed Desoto once landed in this area. It was all jungle prada then. It had to have been very inhospitable to his gallant crew. Today, it is airy homes, many built in a time of no air conditioning. The natural winds off the bay during storm season will cool a house off. You just need to be near the shore. Its the end of winter in Tampa Bay. Winter is our sp

Uber works the five dollar fares on Howard (big fucking deal)

Former taxi driver...will he rip you off? Uber driver Daryl Rodgers knows what he will find when driving after midnight on the weekends. “I had a lot of people who couldn’t tell what they remember from that night, they would pass out in my passenger seat until I got to their destination,” said Rodgers. The number of DUI arrest made by Tampa Police has dropped dramatically this year. For the first six months of 2014 TPD made 1124 dui arrest. In the same period in 2015 they made 776 arrests for driving while intoxicated. And Uber could be one of the reasons. Tampa Police began late in 2014 working with South Tampa bars to trained bartenders and valets to spot impaired drivers and suggest they find another way, like Uber home. TPD spokeswoman Andrea Davis tells 8 On Your Side that valet drivers have been advised to notify them when an impaired driver gets behind the wheel. But 8 On Your Side also noticed that many of the places that Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office found that

Uber suspends operations in Nevada

Uber, the maverick ride-sharing company that has been bending the state’s transportation rules for a month, ceased operations in Nevada late Wednesday, vowing to return when it finds a clear path to operating legally in the state. The decision for the temporary shut-down came after a conference call of Uber management and was announced publicly in a blog post on the company’s website. A company spokeswoman issued an emailed statement just after 10 p.m. “It’s unfortunate that Nevada is the first state in the nation to temporarily suspend Uber,” said spokeswoman Eva Behrend. “That means nearly 1,000 jobs just disappeared overnight and those residents lost their ability to earn a living. On the eve of Thanksgiving, when Nevadans should be celebrating with family, now many are worried about how they’re going to pay their bills.” The San Francisco-based technology company was dealt two legal blows earlier this week, the more lethal one occurring Tuesday when Washoe County District C

Angel The Rescued Kitten

I have a new and wonderful friend. Her name is Angel. George found her on his way home at 3 in the morning running around on the elevated span of highway 19 in Clearwater. He pulled over and pulled out of a storm drain. He took her home and knocked on my door. He has two cats and wanted me to keep her overnight until he could find a neighbor to take her. I fell in love with her. She is now my best friend and keeps me company for I live alone. It's not fair that so much cuteness can be crammed into such a little thing.

Requiem for the taxi industry

We lost. Its over. Uber won in court. A republican judge ignored law and ruled Uber to be legal. They do not abide by regulations but politicians and judges don't care. The number of lives that are adversely affected by Circuit Judge Huey is immeasurable. I should be upset but I'm not. Actually, I'm over it. I have moved on. I am making money off of YouTube and will soon open a new moneymaking channel along with my swimming blog. I am done with taxi driving. The hipsters want Uber so bad, they can have it. I hope you people enjoy paying 10x fare when there are no taxis left or a regulatory agency to protect them. You fools. Go to www.timswims.blogspot.com if you want to know what happened to me. I am achieving something over there. posted from Bloggeroid

Ivy Farms pool part of history

I found this article on the Daily Press website. It will mean nothing to anyone but it means a lot to me. This article wad written in 1993 when the possibility of closing Ivy Farms pool was real. I hear in 2010 it was demolished by the city. Just another nail in my coffin. I always wanted to get up there and swim one more lap. That will never happen July 22, 1993|By VIRGINIA BIGGINS Daily Press NEWPORT NEWS — Three decades ago when the Ivy Farms swimming pool was new, people of all ages came early and stayed late to swim, sunbathe and chat with friends. DAILY PRESS: Neighborhood kids campaigned to get their families to become members of the pool, which they saw as the only place to be on a hot summer day. Many joined the Ivy Farms swim team. posted from Bloggeroid Now the pool, one of the oldest in the city, may have to close because its membership has dropped from an all-time high of 300 families in the 1960s to 50 families today.
