What Lyft and Uber will take from the Tampa taxi business

A lyft car at the Iconic sign on Florida ave downtown Tampa
I have been a hack in Tampa Florida since 1995. Unlike the estimated 50% of Americans that hate their jobs, I have never had a day when I did not feel like going to work. Certainly, the last few years  have not been fun because the economy fell apart like a three dollar watch. However, economies are like tides and this one is on the rebound, at a snail's pace. I would like to thank Mr. Obama for that but that would not be fair. The economy is recovering despite any fiscal policy of his. That being said - there are challenges.

My job is inherently difficult. We face strange and deranged people street level on a daily basis. Taxi companies in Tampa (which are regulated) must serve the general population. We have no choice. Short fares, drunk fares, people going to buy drugs (they don't tell you that) we must pick up. Don't get me wrong, there are business people, beautiful women, great trippers, and long hauls. The difficulty comes in not really knowing if you will make any money. For someone with a gamblers personality, this job is fine. I am getting older and risk is not my favorite hobby anymore.

I am a people person. I have met some of the most outstanding people in the world doing this. People I would  have never met, I met through the cab. When my girlfriend died a few years ago, it was my passengers that gave me solace and comfort. I have met general officers from Central Command and asked them if UFO's were real or if we went to the moon in 1969. In sort, I have enjoyed my life and time as a taxi driver.

UBER and LYFT now threaten all of this

Lyft adds nothing to any community they go into. They only cannibalize on the business that is already there. In fact, their drivers only "cherry Pick" the cream. It is a hipster service being run by hipsters. Unlike cities that are regulated, these drivers will not have to work in the poor and BLACK areas of town. They can sit in their little green cars, pick up their green passengers, and feel they are saving the whales or something. All they are doing is taking the best fares away from people who have paid their dues and now, will not be able to survive.

We won't make it because the daytime business of little old ladies and poor people at grocery stores and bars will not pay the lease. Five dollar fares with no tip will not work.

UBER and LYFT are Illegal in most cities

Is that who you want to ride with? People who are breaking the law? I bet most people who drive for them are Democrats. These are the very people who criticize the Republicans for their law and order stance. I guess this proves my point. Nobody should frequent a business that is a speak easy by nature.
Drivers have been on the ropes for the last few years. There is not enough slices of the pie to go around. Men have been doing this for years and raised families doing it. Are you wanting to make beggars out of us?

If Lyft has something to contribute to the local community, then they should be giving a shot. They are not and that is why Hillsborough County has shut them out. I really believe the HCPTC should start giving out those $800 fines and impounding their cars. Maybe that would knock the smug look off their faces.
Hard Times For Tampa

Tampa Bay area has had hard times since 2007 on all fronts. We are now walking on wobbly knees. Please allow us to recover from this Tommy John. Good jobs  have left. The world has changed and I know that is the argument for the app service. This is just what the hipsters want. No, let me tell you what people should want and what they should expect.

Tampa Taxi Companies and Drivers meet regulated standards

All Hillsborough County taxi drivers have been screened by the HCPTC for criminal background. If a driver has a warrant or drug offense, he will not be allowed to drive. All drivers  have been screened by a tough as nails insurance company who will not insure drivers who get tickets. Forget about the ticket clinic helping you. If there is smoke, there's fire, and you will not be allowed to driver, until you learn to drive.

The taxi companies must carry a very high limit of liability insurance or they will be considered a threat to the community and the companies will not be allowed to operate. I am talking in the millions of dollars. The Tampa community knows when they call a cab, the driver is not a dangerous fugitive and the company has very deep pockets and is committed to providing the best service anyone can possible ask for.

Lyft is operating against a "cease and desist" order. Why does that make you so sure they have run background investigations on their drivers? What makes you think they have purchased the required liability for when one of their drunk drivers kills you or someone in your family? There is, in fact, every reason that outlaws from the start are not going to comply with any of this.

The end result of Lyft's impact

They will only serve hipsters and college kids with smart phones. Period. They poor suffer as the number of taxi drivers drop off because of the paltry wages. The Tampa Bay area suffers because of these predators. Why would Lyft care? They are based out of Seattle and Uber out of San Francisco. They have no vested interest in the Tampa area. United and  Yellow were founded by local Tampons.

That's what gets me about Bob Buckhorn - the mayor of Tampa. This cat is the one that allowed the food trucks into downtown Tampa, completely ignoring the restaurants that pay taxes and are located downtown. He justified it, in the same way he is Lyft, that in this economy we need jobs. True, what we need are jobs that people can live off of. You are making beggars out of people Buckhorn. I guess  its good your wife had a good job before you got elected because you would have been flying a sign like the rest of the bums on the streets. No offense to bums. At least they work and struggle every day. The hardest thing you ever did was take your mutt to the dog park.

There was a lady who because I was ON TIME for her airport ride, said she could not wait for Uber to come into the area. She used to be the press secretary of Jeb Bush. If she reads this, she will know who I am talking about. She offended me deeply. The worst part was, she had no idea what she was talking about. I do. I  have lived the life for 19 years and I will fight for my livelihood.

This war has just begun.

  1. Amen Tim!!! these Uber and Lyft drivers should be pulled over, arrested, and their cars impounded for operating a vehicle for hire without permits. Let me catch one over here in Pinellas county stealing one of my fares and watch what happens...But I'm a crazy Florida Cracker who believes in street justice when all else fails...CRACKER

  2. To put this in perspective,

The HCPTC does not really enforce their own laws set forth by their commission,

Example: Why are the Supershuttle vans allowed to pick up in Hillsborough county, airport and residential, but yet some maybe most have no permits on their vehicles and why does the HCPTC keep issuing permits for cabs and towncars when there are already too many vehicles in ground transportation as is? (over 800 cabs and 1200 town cars) and growing!

The HCPTC has been corrupt from day one, every president they have had has been busted for illegal activites and to charge $100 for a hack license every year when a driver license is only $48 every 10 years!

    Simply put: GREED!

Secondly customers/passengers are tired of and do not feel comfortable getting into a vehicle with drivers from third world countries that speed, rip them off on the meter and a cab that smells.

And customers/passengers are tired of calling the cab companies and dealing with reservations/operators that are not properly trained, impolite and rude, These fares stopped calling for a cab because of poor customer service skills. The call volume for taxi's is way down for said reasons.

I DO NOT condone nor would I use Uber or Lyft drivers. Seems the HCPTC won't give a dam either.

  6. "United and Yellow were founded by local Tampons." I think you meant to write Tampanians, not Tampons. Lyft and Uber are here to stay. Maybe you should clear up your act and treat people better by not overcharging, smoking, taking longer routes, and claiming you credit card machine is "broken" but ill take you to an ATM while the meter is running. You did this to yourself. A little competition never hurt anyone.

  7. Technology once again has changed an industry. There is room for the "ride share" industry in any city, but they need to be recognized as such and be regulated just like cab and limo drivers. Speaking of regulations Hillsborough is way over regulated with their 5 year old car rule and outrageous fees which are about 4 times more than any other county. The HCPTC is corrupt and have been paid off long ago to make tougher regulations to illuminate new competition and forcing the public to pay outrageous per mile fees, its criminal. If you think I'm crazy think again, their former commissioner is rotting in jail right now for that very thing, cabs can also be 5 years older than "luxury sedans" gee how did that rule get bought, I mean implemented into the regulations, The permits do not have to cost that much, all a car should need is a safety inspection(no matter what year) and have a flawless interior & exterior, not some converted out cop car. Trust me the people calling Uber would never call a cab, they are a better class of people, they are not telling Uber drivers to drive to every shady hotel until they score drugs. So to my point there is room for the "ride share" industry and hopefully they will force the County Commission just like they have in every other city to change the regulations, not just for them but for everyone, so more competition can come in and god forbid save the public some money....

A Shit Ticket

Bad news. Jacamino was willing to sir on a call for two hours waiting for it to come out. We call that sand bagging. I call it "a shit ticket." There was so much business going on you couldn't shake a stick at it. Why tie yourself up like this in such a myopic way. Suit yourself dumbass. I made more money during the same time you ran the shit ticket. If Uber is around, you would not have known it today. posted from Bloggeroid

Wear your seat belts

Wear our seat belt Please wear your seat belt at all times. You never know when you might be distracted when driving. Something could happen if you take your eyes off the road. You don't want to take your eyes off the road. So have your passengers wear theirs too.

Angel The Rescued Kitten

I have a new and wonderful friend. Her name is Angel. George found her on his way home at 3 in the morning running around on the elevated span of highway 19 in Clearwater. He pulled over and pulled out of a storm drain. He took her home and knocked on my door. He has two cats and wanted me to keep her overnight until he could find a neighbor to take her. I fell in love with her. She is now my best friend and keeps me company for I live alone. It's not fair that so much cuteness can be crammed into such a little thing.

RETIRED..what did you expect?

I have retired from taxi driving for good. I turned the keys in and walked away from 24 years on the streets. In a way, like Ronald Reagan said, the taxi business walked away from me. Anyway, I am home and doing nothing but getting caught up on a bunch of personal stuff. I am loving it. Check out this video about how I spend most mornings now. I have applied to work for Lyft and was approved, of course. I should be getting a new car next week and will be driving for them. Ride share has become the new taxi companies and they deliver what I am looking for. I have two monthly checks coming in which are enough to live off of. So don't worry about me. Its just that I was not exactly ready to retire but the circumstances gave me no choice. It does feel good, by the way.

Rays Baseball and two bogus tickets

There is nothing like getting free tickets to a Tampa Bay Rays baseball game. These are not just tickets, but Boston Redsox vsTampa Bay Rays tickets. In fact, they are too the Whitney Bank Club high price seating. This is where the fat cats and the bigwigs go to watch a game. These $175 tickets include free buffet style food and free booze. There is prime rib, shrimp, lasagna, and everything you could dream of. The wait staff serves your every need, and we Tom and I had tickets. My best taxi driver friend Tom Castros took a high-roller to the airport this morning and they businessman said he had the tickets, but his plans had changed and he wanted to just give Tom the tickets for the $25 fare. Tom took them in a heartbeat and called me on my cellphone. I said "hell ya! Lets go!" The game was set for a 4:15 start and we were both hungry. Free drink and food...I'm all over it! We would soon be surrounded by beautiful women and the rich and powerful in the Tampa Bay area...

Death of the taxi business

The taxi business is dead in the United States. This industry is going the way of the Payphone and the neighborhood video store. Did I mention Kodak film? I know technology has changed the nature of work but in this case the politicians are who ruined the taxi industry. They were unwilling to support a regulated industry. Keep in mind, almost all businesses are regulated. For some reason, the politicians decided that because of the popularity of uber, they would allow Rideshare to operate until state legislators made them legal. Therefore, killing off my business. Why it was transportation and not construction, hairstyling, pizza delivery, hot dog stands, insurance, law, and so forth, I will take to my grave not knowing the answer. All I know, is that my life has been ruined. It is over. I cannot make a living. I'm being evicted from my home I cannot pay my electric bill or any other bill. My life is in shambles and I face an uncertain future. Is there really anything more to say? ...

EVIDENCE and CRYPTID FOSSILS in Central Florida

Tim Now Drives for LYFT...and loving it!

After 24 years of driving taxi for United Cab of Tampa, I am now driving for LYFT. Good call, I think. Ride share has taken over and the taxi companies are going the way of the pay phone and the corner video store.

Working hard at this

Working on Paul (the drunk guys) patio As you can see, I have been working hard driving the taxi and working on what version of this blog I want. I believe I will settle on the Blogger platform. Do not be fooled by this photo. I do not have a computer. My computer died about six months ago and I am using an android phone. That is all I have. Most of files and photos were backed up. So, no big deal. I do have a mobile version of Chrome that I use at the library. That is getting me through.

Michael Brown was a criminal

Michael Brown was a thug and a criminal. He had bought into the worst part of black culture. The worthless culture that produces irredeemable young men that contribute nothing to society while filling the morgues with dead black men from the hand if black men. As a cab driver, I see the safest place a black man can be at night is in a white neighborhood. For the president to suggest this involved racism or poverty is wrong. Its a lack of values, self respect, and personal identity. Again Mr. Obama, individuals improve by looking at themselves and not trying to blame others for problems you created. We are now seeing this distinction on a large scale. posted from Bloggeroid
